Chakrata is a hill station that falls under Dehradun tehsil and it comes under the Jansuar-Bawar area. It is a cantonment area and foreigners are restricted here. It is restricted because it is the permanent garrison of the secretive and elite Special Frontier Force, also known as ‘Establishment 22’ (called “Two-Two”), the only ethnic Tibetian unit of the Indian Army.

Chakrata established as a cantonment by British Indian Army colonel Hume in 1869. it is the best scenic view hill station which is loved by everyone. an idle place for couples, back papers and those who don’t like too many crowds.

It lies between the Tons and Yamuna rivers, at an elevation of 2118 m, 98 km from the state capital, Dehradun. To the West lies Himachal Pradesh and to the east are Mussoorie and Tehri Garhwal. The local people speaks Jaunsari a mixture of Garhwali and himachali.

Owing to its high-security location, only Indian nationals can gain access to Chakrata. Foreign tourists are allowed upto Kalsi and have to obtain a permit from the Commandant 22 Force c/o 56 APO.

When to visit

The best time to visit Chakrata is between April and June, and from September to November. In the rainy season, the routes tend to become slippery and are prone to landslides. During winter, temperature can dip as low as negative 5 degree C. Surrounded by the gorgeous Himalayan range. Snuggled in the Dehradun district, this quaint and charming hill retreat is best known for its serenity and spellbinding views around. If you don’t like too many noisy places and want to keep it a good experience of nature then Chakrata is a worth visit.

This hilly town is a haven for nature lovers, wildlife photographers and ornithologists alike, as its forests boast diverse fauna ranging from wild fowls, spotted deer and panthers. Chakrata is also home to several species of medicinal plants. Bird watchers can head to the Deoban area (about 13 km from Chakrata). Lying at an elevation of approximately 9,400 m, the Deoban area boasts thick deodar cover and uninterrupted views of the Himalayan ranges. Another popular tourist attraction of Chakrata is Tiger Falls. Located about five km from the town, this waterfall drops from a height of over 300 m into a rocky pool.

The Tiger Falls is considered one of the tallest waterfalls in India making it one of the most popular places to visit near Chakrata. It has an elevation of 312 feet and the spot can be reached after a 5km trek from Chakrata. This serves as a great picnic spot thanks to the beauteous falls surrounded by lush green forests.

Villagers are dependent on agriculture as it is far from the main market so it is very hard to go to there for daily needs.

Tiger Fall is named because the sound of the fall is just like the roar of the Tiger. The trekking route is surrounded by dense forests having oak and rhododendron trees.
